# A Zendesk alternative for founders and small support teams

The first support team often grows out of a founder's inbox. You need to know who is replying and keep the customer conversation in view. We're building Pipp for that stage: a shared email inbox with AI assistance and a non-AI core that's free forever. AI is free during beta and paid afterward.

[Zendesk Support Team starts with email ticketing, routing, reporting, and automations][zendesk-pricing]; Suite goes further into service operations. Those tools make sense when your team needs them. If you're shaping a small email team, reserve your spot on Pipp's waitlist for a focused first inbox. We're preparing an email-only invited beta.

## The short answer

Consider Pipp if you're a founder, developer, or small support team whose main channel is email and who can evaluate a focused product through an invited beta. We're designing for the daily work of replying together. There is no invitation date yet, and the first beta may open before AI is enabled.

Choose Zendesk if you need ticketing and rules now. Choose a Zendesk Suite plan if you also need live chat, messaging, telephony, or a help center in the same platform. [Zendesk sells Support and Suite as distinct service plans][zendesk-pricing]; comparing Pipp with all of Suite and calling it an email inbox would miss the point.

## Pipp and Zendesk at a glance

| Question | Pipp | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main job? | Shared customer email support for founders and small teams, with AI assistance in the product direction. | Support Team covers email ticketing; Suite adds wider customer service channels and tools. |
| Can a team use it now? | Not yet. We're at the waitlist stage, before internal testing and invited beta. | Yes. Zendesk offers paid plans and a 14-day trial. |
| What can the team do together? | Our v1 scope includes shared inboxes, assignment, internal notes, and team roles. This is planned scope, not public availability. | Support Team lists ticket routing, responses, customer context, dashboards, and automations. Suite has a wider agent workspace and channel routing. |
| Which channels are covered? | Email only in v1. Chat is planned after launch. | Support Team starts with email; Suite Team includes messaging, live chat, and telephony. |
| What about AI? | AI assistance is part of our direction. The first beta may open before AI is enabled. | AI agents are available on Support and Suite with automated-resolution billing. Some Copilot use is included on eligible plans; the full add-on costs extra. |
| What does the core cost? | The non-AI core is free forever. AI is free during beta and paid afterward; we haven't set our post-beta AI price yet. | Support Team starts at $19 per agent per month paid yearly. Suite Team starts at $55 on the same terms. There is no general free plan. |

Zendesk plan and AI facts were checked against its [pricing page][zendesk-pricing], [Suite documentation][zendesk-suite], [add-on guide][zendesk-add-ons], and [Copilot allowance guide][zendesk-copilot-allowance] on September 24, 2026.

## When our smaller scope makes sense

We're building for the small team that answers its own customer email and wants that shared work to be clear. The non-AI core stays free forever, which matters if the team needs an inbox before it needs a support operations budget. Joining the waitlist registers your interest in that simpler starting point.

We're shaping the interface around reading, discussing, and replying to customer email together. Careful design and clear writing are part of that daily work. Zendesk's broader reporting and operations tools sit outside our v1 scope.

## When Zendesk earns its place

Zendesk Support Team is a real choice for email-focused teams that already need [ticket routing, automations, canned responses, and dashboards][zendesk-pricing]. That's a meaningful step beyond a shared inbox even before you look at Suite.

Keep or choose Zendesk when you need:

- a working ticketing system rather than a waitlist;
- structured routing, reporting, and automations today;
- live chat, messaging, voice, and a help center together through Suite;
- more advanced controls, integrations, and support operations; or
- existing Zendesk workflows and history that your team relies on.

[Suite Team combines email with messaging, live chat, telephony, a knowledge base, and omnichannel routing][zendesk-pricing]. The [Suite plan guide][zendesk-suite] documents the broader channel scope. If that is how your team serves customers, those extra parts are the product, not clutter.

## What Zendesk costs

[Zendesk displays these US-dollar rates per agent per month when paid yearly][zendesk-pricing]. Monthly and multi-year subscriptions are available, but the monthly rates were not verified for this comparison.

| Zendesk customer service plan | Annual rate shown | What the tier adds |
|---|---:|---|
| Support Team | $19 per agent/month | Email ticketing, routing, prebuilt dashboards, responses, customer context, automations |
| Suite Team | $55 per agent/month | Knowledge base, messaging, live chat, telephony, omnichannel routing |
| Suite Professional | $115 per agent/month | More advanced routing, phone options, and AI and admin tools |
| Suite Enterprise + Copilot | Contact sales | Enterprise controls and Copilot bundle |

There is no general permanent free plan on [Zendesk's pricing page][zendesk-pricing]. The default [14-day trial uses Suite Professional and includes Copilot for evaluation][zendesk-pricing]. Zendesk also has a [six-month startup credit program][zendesk-startups] for approved, newly registered, venture-funded businesses with fewer than 50 employees. It covers up to 50 agents, excludes add-ons and some usage, and moves to billing afterward unless the subscription changes or ends. Check the eligibility rules before counting those credits in your budget.

AI has its own accounting. [Zendesk AI agents use automated resolutions as the billing unit][zendesk-pricing]. Plans include an allowance, and additional use can cost more. We did not verify a public price per extra resolution. Some [Copilot features have a limited included allowance on Suite and Support Professional or higher][zendesk-copilot-allowance]. The full [Copilot add-on is listed at $50 per agent per month paid yearly][zendesk-pricing], and Zendesk [limits it to Suite Professional and above or eligible Support with Knowledge plans][zendesk-add-ons]. That $50 add-on is not the price of Support Team AI, nor is it a charge every Suite Team buyer must pay. Other usage and add-ons can affect the total.

Our non-AI core is free forever. AI is free during beta and paid afterward. We haven't set our post-beta AI price or billing model yet, and we can't calculate a like-for-like total against Zendesk's broader plans.

## Where we plan to go

We're starting with email. Chat is one of the first features we plan to add after launch, alongside broader AI assistance. We haven't set dates for either. If you need chat in the current support stack, Zendesk Suite already offers it.

## Can you move from Zendesk to Pipp?

We don't have a verified Zendesk importer, migration service, field mapping, or cutover process. Keep Zendesk running while you evaluate Pipp's beta.

[Zendesk documents account exports to JSON, CSV, or XML for Support Professional, Support Enterprise, and Suite plans][zendesk-export]. Permissions and account enablement matter. That documented account-export option does not include Support Team. We haven't verified what a Pipp importer could accept, which ticket history and attachments would transfer, or how open requests would stay covered. An export file is a start, not a switch button.

## Questions about Pipp as a Zendesk alternative

### Is Pipp a complete Zendesk replacement?

No. We're building focused email support for small teams. Zendesk already offers working ticketing and automations, and its Suite plans cover more channels, reporting, and controls than our v1 scope.

### Is Pipp free forever?

Our non-AI core is free forever. AI features are free during beta and paid afterward. We haven't set our post-beta AI price yet. Free does not promise unlimited usage.

### Is Zendesk Support Team the same as Zendesk Suite Team?

No. [Support Team is the $19 email-and-ticketing entry plan; Suite Team is the $55 plan that adds a knowledge base, messaging, live chat, telephony, and omnichannel routing][zendesk-pricing]. Both displayed rates are per agent per month paid yearly.

### Does Zendesk have a free plan for startups?

Zendesk lists a [14-day trial and an application-based startup credit program][zendesk-pricing], not a general permanent free plan. [The startup program has eligibility rules and expires after six months][zendesk-startups].

### What does Zendesk AI cost?

[AI agent usage is measured in automated resolutions][zendesk-pricing]. Some [Copilot features have an included usage allowance on eligible plans][zendesk-copilot-allowance]. The full [Copilot add-on lists at $50 per agent per month paid yearly][zendesk-pricing] on [eligible higher plans][zendesk-add-ons]. Your total depends on your plan, use, and any add-ons; we did not verify a public per-resolution overage rate.

### When can I use Pipp, and will it have chat?

We're at the waitlist stage. We'll test internally before inviting beta users, with no fixed invitation date. Email is our v1 channel. Chat is planned after launch, and the first beta may open before AI is enabled.

### Should I cancel Zendesk before trying Pipp?

No. We haven't verified a Zendesk-to-Pipp migration path. Join the waitlist if the email-first approach fits; there is no promised beta invitation date or documented cutover path yet.
