Pipp compared with Chatwoot
A Chatwoot alternative for founders who start with email
Running your own support server can be a good choice when deployment control matters. It can also be one more system for a small team to maintain. We’re building Pipp as a managed shared email inbox for teams that would rather spend that time answering customers, with AI assistance. Our non-AI core is free forever; AI is free during beta and paid afterward.
Chatwoot offers two different ways to run support: its hosted cloud service and self-hosted editions. Pipp takes a narrower approach, built around customer email and a permanently free core. If that sounds like your team, reserve your spot on the waitlist. We’re working toward welcoming as many teams as we can into the invited beta.
The short answer
Pipp is for small teams whose main support channel is email and who want a managed product. We’re building a focused place to reply together. Self-hosting and control over your own deployment are reasons to consider Chatwoot’s self-hosted editions.
Choose Chatwoot if you want open-source software on your own infrastructure, or if you need live chat and other channels now. Its cloud pricing table has one detail worth noticing: the ongoing free Hacker plan supports website live chat, but not email. Cloud email begins on a paid plan. The free cloud plan is also different from the 15-day trial.
Pipp and Chatwoot at a glance
| Question | Pipp | Chatwoot |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main job? | Shared customer email for founders and small teams, with AI assistance in our product direction. | A working, open-source support platform offered in cloud and self-hosted editions. |
| Can I use it today? | No. Waitlist first, then internal testing and invited beta. No invitation date. | Yes. Cloud has a free Hacker plan, paid plans, and a 15-day trial. Self-hosted Community Edition has no Chatwoot license fee. |
| Which channels are covered? | Email only in v1. Chat is planned after launch. | Cloud Hacker is website live chat only. Paid cloud plans include email, live chat, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other listed channels. |
| Who runs it? | We’re building a managed product. We do not offer a self-hosted edition. | Chatwoot runs its cloud service; self-hosted customers operate their own deployment. |
| What about AI? | AI assistance is part of our direction, but the first beta may open before it is enabled. AI is free during beta and paid afterward. | Cloud paid plans include Captain AI credits, with extra credits sold separately. Self-hosted Community Edition excludes Captain AI. |
| What does free cover? | The non-AI core inbox is free forever. Free does not promise unlimited usage. | Cloud Hacker is free for up to 2 agents and 500 conversations a month, without email. Self-hosted Community Edition has no Chatwoot license fee, but you run the infrastructure. |

When our smaller direction fits
We’re building for founders who still read customer email themselves and small teams that want to answer it together. If that’s the job, a managed email product may be the right amount of software. You should be able to make a thoughtful reply without also becoming the on-call person for the support server.
Give customer email a dedicated home without taking on another server. Reserve your spot to try the approach we’re building.
When Chatwoot is the stronger fit
If deploying and operating your own support software is a requirement, choose Chatwoot’s self-hosted path. Community Edition is free of Chatwoot license charges; paid editions add capabilities and support. The team still needs a Linux server, PostgreSQL, Redis, and people to maintain the service. For a developer who wants control of the deployment, that work may be entirely worth it. We can’t offer the same choice.
Chatwoot also suits teams whose customer conversations already span email, live chat, WhatsApp, social channels, and other paid-cloud channels. Its paid plans include help-center tools and Captain AI credits; Business adds teams and automation rules. Keep Chatwoot if those channels or workflows matter today. Our email-only v1 would leave too much of your support day elsewhere.
What Chatwoot costs
The rates below are Chatwoot’s displayed dollar prices per agent per month, billed annually. The cited pricing pages do not identify an ISO currency. The cloud free plan and the 15-day trial are separate. We did not verify monthly-billed prices. Cloud plans and self-hosted plans have different operating costs.
| Chatwoot plan | Displayed annual rate | What matters for a small team |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Hacker | $0 | Up to 2 agents, 500 conversations/month, website live chat only; no email or Captain AI |
| Cloud Startups | $19/agent/month | Email and other listed channels; 300 Captain AI credits/month |
| Cloud Business | $39/agent/month | Adds teams and automation rules; 500 Captain AI credits/month |
| Cloud Enterprise | $99/agent/month | Adds SSO/SAML and audit logs; 800 Captain AI credits/month |
| Self-hosted Community Edition | $0 Chatwoot license | Your infrastructure and operations; no Captain AI or priority support |
| Self-hosted Premium Support | $19/agent/month | Your infrastructure; adds Captain AI and priority support |
| Self-hosted Enterprise Edition | $99/agent/month | Your infrastructure; adds SSO/SAML and SLA policies |
The paid cloud plans call conversations unlimited, subject to Chatwoot’s fair-use policy. Additional Captain AI credits cost $20 per 1,000. For two cloud Startups agents, the annual-billing rate is $38 per month, or $456 committed for a year, before extra credits. The self-hosted $0 license is not a $0 server bill. We did not price a representative deployment or verify self-hosted Captain AI usage charges.
Our non-AI core is free forever. AI is free during beta and paid afterward. We have not set our post-beta AI price or billing model. Chatwoot’s AI credits and our planned AI assistance are different offers, so those figures do not establish an AI cost saving.
What we’re planning after email
Email is our v1 channel. Chat is among the first features we plan to add after launch, alongside broader AI assistance. We have not set dates for either. Chatwoot already has a live chat widget if your site relies on one.
Can you move from Chatwoot to Pipp?
We do not have a verified Chatwoot importer, migration service, field mapping, or cutover process. Keep Chatwoot running while you evaluate Pipp’s beta.
Chatwoot says its API can export conversations, contacts, and other data. That is useful source access, but it does not tell us which messages, attachments, notes, assignments, or channel details Pipp could accept. We have not tested an export against Pipp, and we do not yet know how to move open email requests without missed or duplicate replies.
Questions about Pipp as a Chatwoot alternative
Is Pipp a self-hosted Chatwoot replacement?
No. We’re building a managed email product. Chatwoot offers open-source self-hosting; we do not offer self-hosting or equivalent deployment control. Choose Chatwoot if that control is a requirement.
Does Chatwoot have a free email plan?
Its cloud Hacker plan is free for up to 2 agents and 500 conversations per month, but excludes email. Cloud email is included from the $19-per-agent-per-month Startups plan on annual billing. Self-hosted Community Edition is free of Chatwoot license fees, with infrastructure and operation left to your team.
Is Pipp free forever?
Our non-AI core inbox is free forever. AI is free during beta and paid afterward. We have not set our post-beta AI price yet. Free does not promise unlimited usage.
What does Chatwoot’s AI cost?
Cloud Startups, Business, and Enterprise include 300, 500, and 800 Captain AI credits per month; extra credits cost $20 per 1,000. The cloud Hacker plan and self-hosted Community Edition exclude Captain AI. We did not verify the total AI charges for a self-hosted paid deployment.
When can I use Pipp, and will it have chat?
We’re at the waitlist stage. We’ll test internally before inviting beta users, with no fixed invitation date. Email comes first; chat is planned after launch. The first beta may open before AI is enabled.
Should I cancel Chatwoot before trying Pipp?
No. We have not verified a Chatwoot-to-Pipp migration path or a beta invitation date. Keep current support running while you evaluate Pipp.
